Amrita Pritam an Indian poet and writer, born in pre-independence India is considered as the most important voice for the women in Punjabi literature as she was the first prominent woman Punjabi poet, novelist, and essayist.

Being born in Gujranwala (now in Punjab,Pakistan),she is loved in both India as well as Pakistan. She contributed over 100 books of poetry, fiction, biographies, essays,a cluster of Punjabi folk songs and it also included an autobiography which was translated into several languages.

Pinjar was her most prominent work as a writer where  Ajj aakhaan Waris Shah nu (Today I invoke Waris Shah – “Ode to Waris Shah”), reflected her grief as well as anger as a poet of the havoc, during partition of India. The works of Amrita Pritam usually included simple, soulful and authentic language. Her works include partition related discussions, events, problems as well as solutions.

Her early life was full of ups and down as she lost her mother at quite an early age. Further her father restricted her fondness for romantic art and was against her writing love poems. He used to suggest her to write poems which included religion and spirituality as the main theme. But she couldn’t resist the urge and her passion for the romantic poems and so she used to write a poem for her own sake every night and tear the pages, so that her father couldn’t read them.

She got engaged at a very young age when she was merely four years. Sixteen years was a turning point in her life as she got her first anthology of poems, Amrit Lehran (Immortal Waves) which got published in 1935 and simultaneously in the same year she got married to Pritam Singh, who was an editor. In the same year she replaced her original name from Amrita Kaur to Amrita Pritam.

She also worked in All India Radio in Delhi and Lahore. In the year 1960, she left her husband and went to Delhi for a poets conclave where she met Sahir Ludhianavi who was a well known urdu poet. It is said that her love was never reciprocated from the other end. He was rumoured to have an affair with Sudha Malhotra.
